Third Place Zine Issue 2: Movement Building
Published by Third Place Zine
“As we were considering themes for our second issue, it was hard to see beyond the atrocities of the times we are living. We were hard pressed to find things that were worth celebrating. It got us thinking about how people mobilize and organize in times of crisis, and how, frequently, this mobilization can be found in unconventional places. While some organizing happens online, the most important steps in building strong communities occur in person.
“We’ve broken the issue up into two sections based on the double entendre of the issue’s title: Movement Building. The first section, Building, is about the mobilization of social and political movements occurring through organizing, activism, and subversion. This section takes us to some of the places where we see this mobilization occurring: family shelters, hospital wards, historical archives, and within mutual aid networks.
“The second section, Movement, is about the spaces that contain or demand physicality or movement: dance parties, concert venues, karaoke clubs, basketball courts, and comedy stages—to name a few—and how they can be avenues for resistance and collective effervescence. The communities that are highlighted throughout are brave, compassionate and give us faith in a better future.
“Despite the dismal times we find ourselves in, this issue is filled with stories of joy, and hope. From tea parties, to hot girls influencing elections, to live music and clowns, you will find yourself energized and optimistic as you flip through these pages. Or, at least, we hope you do.
