Third Place Zine Issue 1: Parkscapes

Published by Third Place Zine

“For the first issue of Third Place Zine, we chose a ‘third place’ that felt both perfectly accesible and had endless oppotunities for entries: ‘Parkscapes’. Most everyone, regardless of their age, race, gender, and ability, has spent time in a aprk. Whether that b while walking a dog, barbecuing on the weekend, playing a recreational sport, attending a community meeting or protest, all of these experiences in urban or natural settings feel universal.

“Spending leisure time in parks is linked to a history of free time for the middle class. Today, parks in the US are sometimes militarized. They have laws rooted in classism, racism, and discrimination. They might contribute to systems of opression and displacement. How do we reconcile these contradictory ideas of leisure and oppression? Who is the park really meant for? What is the ideal park? How does it fit within today’s urban fabric?

“In thhis issue we explore ideas of the urban garden, the skate park,  the food we eat, the plants we see, the parks that shape who we are. Our stories come from across the US and around the world, written by chefs, designers, bureaucrats, and researchers.

“We hope these peices provide provocative ideas and shared experiences. Please enjoy this issue on a bench in your favorite park!
