With Handshake

1 Sessions (5 hrs)
Group Workshop

Facilitated by Handshake

︎︎︎ Handshake is the collaborative design practiceof Jaime Sebastián and Rubén Montesinos. With an emphasis on printed matter, they designand execute publications, visual identities, websites, packaging design, apparel, andphotography for clients in very diverse fields, either at a large or small scale.

What you’ll learn:

Starting with a quick game of chance, you will receive a project folder, with some public domain material selection and a series of properties (format, paper, binding…) the challenge is to transform all this into a small and short zine with a personal meaning in just five hours. Using the fast food books method, we will focus on conceptualizing, editing, and sequencing the content, looking for creative graphic solutions, and prototyping the final result. In this workshop, we will go through the main phases of creating an independent editorial project, and you’ll learn to work as a team, be flexible to solve the unforeseen limitations of printing, and communicate and defend your editorial proposals.

︎︎︎In short, the main objective of the workshop is to acquire a basic toolkit of skills to become a self-publisher and lose the fear to start printing.︎︎︎

Who this course is for:

This course is for anyone who wants to get into the beautiful world of self-publishing and doesn’t know where to start.

What you’ll need:

You will need to bring a notebook and your laptop with Adobe InDesign installed. It is recommended – although not necessary – to have basic knowledge of layout design.

Takeaway

Participants will walk away with 10 copies of their zine. The formats will be very varied but all of them start from the same printing format, just one double-sided tabloid riso print. (16-page micro zine, magic zine solutions, or accordion-folded zines are some of the options that can be derived from there.)
